The city hopes to fill the open position by the end of February

The New Year is not off to a good start!

I have been notified that we lost Fred Esparza and Jay Wendling this morning.

More to come, hopefully a full report in the next Farsider.

From Fred’s Daughter:

Age 83, badge #1243. 30 years with 5 as a reserve. Original member of H Car unit.
I mean I’d love to say last cop that wore taps in his shoes  but the young kids wouldn’t know what that meant. I think he did over 10 in Street Crimes. And co-founder of the first bicycle unit. They used there own 10 speed bikes. I don’t know what else to say. Loved his job every single day.

UPDATE: 1/11/21

Thank you so much Leroy. Latest update! You are so wonderful and I appreciate all your effort, I’m on my way back to be with Larry. He’s aware, and returns my kisses and squeezes my hand, he can’t talk with the trachea, his eyes meet mine but not much recognition yet, however, the returned kisses are good enough for me at this point. Your buddy, Marie

Larry will be transported to Sanford Health Systems Select Services, long term ACUTE care in Sioux Falls, SD, across the state, once they figure out why his white blood cell count is so high!! The bed at Sanford is being held for him, so he’ll be flown by  medical aircraft (2 hour flight) may be the end of the week. The infections are still raging. This ACUTE care facility will treat all of Larry’s needs:

  1. Breathing machine weaning
  2. PT/OT
  3. Speech therapy when off machine
  4. Dialysis
  5. Neurology
  6. Respiratory therapy
  7. Nutrition
  8. Heart therapy to increase the heart working better – he’s at 35% functionality, up from 12% when he entered the hospital on December 14th.

Oh Leroy, more changes! I’m trying to get Larry to Mayo in Rochester and Monument Health in Rapid City, even though they’re a partner with Mayo, are resisting his transfer there. They want him transported to a long term facility in Denver or Sioux Falls, SD, which is lesser care for a critical patient. Really????? I’m working with all my resources to get him transferred to Mayo. I don’t use FB except to update co-workers and friends I don’t have contact with, but just posted this today. God bless you for letting SJPD retirees know about Larry. Please continue praying and I’m always thinking of my Californians suffering and dying with this damned virus…..another shutdown I think in San Jose/LA.

Always, Marie

Larry met the 14th day of ICU’s standard practice of removing the vent and feeding tubes from his throat to avoid infection! Yesterday they inserted a feeding tube in his stomach and today he’ll be taken to OR to cut his neck (trachea) and insert the vent tube internally to help curve infection from the vent/feeding tubes in his throat. How can inserting these foreign devices help curve infection? He’ll also have another round of kidney dialysis today, through a catheter Kidney failed due to lack of blood from his heart, he’s not urinating bladder empty, dialysis should remove some of the urine/fluids. Infection keeps popping up and he’s being treated through a separate antibiotic IV. LARRY NEEDS A REST PERIOD, A PLATEAU WHERE HIS BRAIN TELLS HIM IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP. LARRY NEEDS SPECIALIZED CARE; BRAIN, HART AND KIDNEY AT MAYO CAMPUS. Patient advocate is pushing for low level care at two Denver and Sioux Falls hospitals/rest homes, not going to happen!!! Larry is in critical condition why would they move him to hospitals with less care! Mayo advised Larry needs to be referred to main Mayo hospital, inpatient, be assessed and moved to one of the step down specialized facilities at Mayo campus, called a swing bud facility where he’ll receive the specialized treatment with a team of doctors who have the best interest at heart for Larry. Monument is a partner with Mayo, so why the barrier? Larry’s desire is to stay alive, wake up from brain stroke, and live his life to the best of his ability with the brain stroke damage: speech and walking. I’m going to save Larry’s life, we’re married 47 years, I know my Larry. Please pray my persistence and determination pays off and we get Larry to Mayo.

Subject: RE: Farsider Available Announcement

I published today as a Farsider-Live.com article and included in the current Farsider as well as the Jan 7 issue.

Please keep us up to date on his progress.

Wishing you and he the best with sincere condolences,

Could you please let the PD retirees know that Larry is in critical condition at Monument Health in Rapid City, SD. It’s been heartbreaking to watch my Larry go through this. Please pray for us. Thank you Leroy!! Marie Romano.

Larry suffered a brain stroke to his left frontal lobe possibly during the stent procedure on Christmas Eve. It was found while in ICU through two CT scans on December 29th. During the procedure, Larry was on a vent and heavily sedated. The neurologist said the stroke is not life threatening and is survivable thank God and Larry has the capability of WAKING UP. The damage (disability) expected is speech and walking, no paralysis or blindness!!

Larry stopped urinating through the catheter and fluids and toxins built in his system to 13% positive so his kidneys failed. The second of three kidney dialysis in his room has been completed resulting in 2 liters of toxins removed yesterday. The goal is for Larry’s kidneys to function which will help his brain tell him to WAKE UP. Please continue praying!!

Sedation was stopped in an attempt to remove the vent and Larry to breathe on his own. Larry wouldn’t wake up so vent is still in which is working at 30% and Larry is breathing at 70%

Larry’s heart is getting stronger and stable at 32%, stents working and oxygen and blood moving through his brain and body. An ultrasound will be ordered to ascertain hopefully a higher number of strength.

Well here’s one that could come in handy.  But I’m sure the ACLU will find something wrong with it.

Little Kids and Their Big Dogs
Andy Seliverstoff is a 58-year-old professional photographer from
St. Petersburg, Russia.
A few years ago some of Seliverstoff’s friends asked him to take
photos of their daughter Alice in a park.   They had their gigantic
Great Dane, Sean, with them, so they decided to incorporate him
into the photos.    After seeing the results, he knew he was on to
something special.
Seliverstoff did another shoot with a child featuring big dogs, and
told BuzzFeed News that he was “deeply touched” by the work.
That was four years ago and he’s been a dog photographer ever since.
The project has become his passion, which he chronicles in a book
called “ Little Kids and Their Big Dogs.
All of the photos are taken in St. Petersburg.    Its extensive parks
and colder climate help create some spectacular shots.

He also tries to ensure that the photos are taken where the dogs
commonly walk and play with children in familiar surroundings so
they are as natural as possible.
Seliverstoff says that most of the subjects in his photos are either
children or grandchildren of people in his friend circle.    He said that
it’s rare that people acquire big dogs while they have young kids,
so most of these dogs were with the families before they had the

The photos depict the interactions between cute kids and these
very gentle giants.

Seliverstoff said the goal of the series wasn’t just to create beautiful
pictures, but to capture the interaction between the children and the

The overall message he’s trying to get across, he said, is simple:
“Love for dogs and children makes people kinder.”

Finally— an Honest Commercial

In episode one, for instance, the mustached Dillermand uses his gigantic, stripey organ as a lead for his dog — but quickly finds himself inundated with requests from his neighbors to take their pets out for a walk, too. At another point in the show, he is stuck floating in mid-air after balloons are tied to his groin.

                    The Hooker’s Union

A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to

check out the local brothels.

When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam, “Is this a union house?”

“No,” she replied, “I’m sorry it isn’t.”

“Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”

“The house gets $60 and the girls get $40,” she answered.

Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search

of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached

a brothel where the Madam responded, “Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules.”

The man asked, “And, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?”

“The girls get $80 and the house gets $20.”

“That’s more like it!” the union man said.

He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and pointed to a stunningly attractive

blue-eyed blonde.

“I’d like her,” he said.

“I’m sure you would, sir,” said the Madam. Then she gestured to a 80 year old woman in the corner,

“but Nancy here has 40 years seniority and according to union rules,
she’s next.”

NOW you know what’s wrong with the seniority system in the House and Senate.

A 2,000 Yard Ricochet:

This guy is shooting a Barrett M82A1 50 caliber sniper rifle – a Green Beret staple ! Watch the dust when he fires.

The target is a steel plate 1,000 yards away (.57 miles or 10 football fields away). You can hear the ping of the hit on the target and then listen carefully for the bullet coming back.It hits the ground just in front of him (look at the dust cloud at 2 seconds from trigger pull).

The 50 caliber bullet then bounces up and hits his ear protection muffs, knocking them off of his head.   The footage is amazing. If you haven’t heard the sound of a bullet ricochet before, you will hear this one.

Consider the probability of the bullet hitting the ground in exactly the right place to bounce up at the correct trajectory angle to hit his ear protection. Fortunately, the angle of the plate he was shooting at, changed the return trajectory of the bullet by “6 inches to the left” – a distance of more than 2000 yards worth of total travel.

If the deviation of the returning bullet was anything less, it would have been a 2000 yard round trip “one-hop-head-shot,” instead of an earmuff clip
